Ken Robinson Scramble Trophy-Organiser’s Report

On Tuesday 21st May in benign conditions the John O’Gaunt Seniors held its first Texas Scramble competition. Fifteen 4 ball teams competed a medal play for the Ken Robinson Trophy. Although play was on the John O’Gaunt course, which was in perfect condition, all teams returned excellent gross scores. In total 38 birdies, plus an eagle on the 14th, were recorded. Only 2 double boogies were shot, both on the 6th.

The runners up were Alan Anderson, Michael A Tomblin, Hugh Harkett, and Robin Carter. Playing seventh in the field, they were top of the leader board with a net score of 63.2 until being pipped at the post by the final 4 ball team of Basil Backhouse, George Menezes, Peter Lowe and Paul Marshall returning a net score of 63 to take the trophy.

Ken Robinson presented the trophy to the winners thanking all competitors for the good turn out and wishing continued success for future years.

Ken Robinson Scramble

I would just like to put on record my appreciation for all the assistance which I received in getting this competition up and running. Firstly, the general committee, for permitting its introduction and secondly, Ian McAinsh for preparation of the rules, Malcolm Lee for efficiently organising the competition and Carolyn for sorting out the entries, preparing the cards and producing the results sheets. I was most impressed with the keepsake trophies provided to the winners which were chosen by our captain, John.

I hope all will agree that the competition is a welcome addition to the Seniors calendar and enhances the intercourse between players of all abilities.

Fortunately, the weather was fair and the John O’Gaunt course in superb condition. The results were predictably close with the winning team scoring 63, the worst being 69.4! For all results, please click HERE.

Rex Bullock Trophy

The Rex Bullock was attended by 68 people which is very encouraging. Having the new experience of playing from the White tees on the Carthagena, it was good for some and not so good for others! The weather was fine and warm with light winds, there should have been no problem in scoring well.

Gerry Gentle certainly showed that his retirement is paying dividends as he scored an excellent 41 points, which cost him 1.5 shots from his handicap! Mr Consistency, Peter Lowe, got 37 points and a loss of 0.6 from his handicap. He could be down to scratch by the end of the season!!! John Whitbread completed the podium, leading a group of five players on 35 points, all of whom also lost something from their handicaps.
