Seniors Captain's Charity

Having raised a huge £3000 from all you wonderful Seniors, for my charity, the Cambridge Milton Childrens Hospice, Linda and I went over to them last Friday 27th. November to present them with the cheque.

We had the grand tour and I have to say the place was wonderful. It was bright and cheerful and unbelieveably clean. They were extremely grateful for the money and to give you some idea of the running costs, Milton needs £5300 a day to keep going and looks after about 300 children in one year. It was a humbling experience, but one we both would not have missed.

Thank you to everybody for your generous contributions, the kids will really appreciate it.

Richard and Linda.

Arthur Lucas Cup - 17th November

Not such a wild and windy day as forecast, however, the players were given a good dowsing from the few squally showers that went across the course. This didn't stop the good golfers from showing the others how it was done.
Only 59 played in the end as there were a number of dropouts close to the day, which was very unfortunate. Graham McKay managed to move people about so that there were only a couple of two balls. The Raffle made a good amount as the start of Jim Peacock's year.
Richard in his last act as Captain in Competitions, presented the Trophy and the memorial clock to John McPherson for his 35 points. Second, also on 35 points was David Lincoln and third, on count back, on 34 points was Peter Wade. Everyone took their prize selection from the table and there were a few prizes left. From my point of view, the majority of the players had adhered to the £7.50 rule but there were still some who were very close to the line. I would say that prizes should be golf related, sweets or booze to save any embarrassment in future.
I am pleased to say it was a qualifier with a CSS of 72 so us mere mortals got another 0.1 back !!!

Ladies and Seniors Texas Scramble - 4th November

Who was it that said “Bill it and they’ll come?”  Well, we billed it and they came. They came in their hundreds, or more precisely, in their 1.03 hundreds. They flew in from Munich and The Balearic Islands. They drove in from Enfield and a myriad other locales. They cycled in from the south side of Sutton and they walked in from the other side of the Gaunt’s 2nd tee box, but they were all driven by that same irresistible impulse; to play in The John O’Gaunt  Ladies and Seniors Annual Texas Scramble.
By 0800 hrs. the ambience in the rapidly filling clubhouse foyer was magnetic. Multiple hands were shook, multiple cheeks were kissed and even multiple verses of Donald O’ Connor’s ‘Good mornin’, Good mornin’  were sung to the odd listener (but only if very odd). All this was happening as coin of the realm cascaded into two rapidly filling antique biscuit tins, of the much sought after ‘All Butter Scottish Shortbread’ variety (well, this is John O’Gaunt after all). In response to said cascade, which continued through 10 am, long ribbons of raffle tickets, in an attractive shade of pink, were dispensed by Marie Bayes, and in a pulsating shade of green, by Paul Marshall. Both dispensers were discharging their third annual ‘front of house’ duties for this very busy event and no one would have guessed from their smilingly delivered and highly amusing repartee, that they’d clocked on at 0700 hrs. that morning.
Then it was 0900 hrs; time to swap the attractions of the foyer for the challenges of the tee box.  It was Tuesday, a little overcast but free of Monday’s fog and Wednesday’s rain. Pat Smith started the ball flying, off the first, with his usual long drive down the middle. Pauline Aubigne knocked it onto the green and Val Cooper sunk a 20 footer to start the day with a birdie.  William Skelding left the green softly singing ‘Thank Heaven For Little Girls’. They’re a musical lot these John O’Gaunt people aren’t they?
At that same 0900hrs, off the 10th,  Jim Kerr drove just right of the green. Steve Collins followed with an enormously friendly drive to the same position and they both watched Doreen Kee chip on and Sylvia Tansley finish the hole with the four that make many of us happy, if we have to start on that hole.
Five hours later (the Seniors do tend to prolong the game when they are playing with attractive ladies) it was all over bar the telling of tall stories about putts that went in and then came out and the good natured but cynical sympathy that they provoke in the listeners.
Captains Christine Darts and Richard Coventry gave congratulations and impressive prizes to:
Themselves i.e. Sue Colledge, Richard Coventry, Chris Darts and Jim Peacock as the team with the best front 9 score.
To Alan Fowler, Hillary Pearmain, Fred Williams and Rosemary Williams (just good golfers) as the team with the best back 9 score.
To Graham Court, Colin Fox, Sue Bassindale, and Diane Hall, as the team with the third best overall score.
To Brian Bullen, Joan Cocksedge,  John Thoday and Eileen Menezes as the team with the second best overall score and
The coveted first prize of the day was presented to the well deserved winning team of Terri Brown, Pauline Gauge, John McPherson and George Turner, who came in with an enviable net 61.3 points.
So, The Ladies and Seniors 2015 Texas Scramble has now become a memory, a warm and treasured memory but,  a memory nevertheless. However, entries for the 2016 Anniversary Event are filling up fast so, if you are quick, then, as Vera never tired of telling us . . . . . We’ll Meet Again.

TSB Trophy

After a misty start, the sun came out for the annual match between Seniors and Juniors.  The Seniors were looking for revenge after last year’s narrow defeat.  They took an early lead in the Captains’ match where Richard Coventry & Dave Gauge overcame Eleanor Thomas & Emily Smith.  Max Chappell & Paul Smith squared things up when they won the 18th for a notable victory over Phil White & Jim Peacock.  The next few matches went the way of the Seniors with wins for Peter Imray & Tony Goodson, Fergus Moynihan & Fred Williams and Pat Gilgallon & Ken Robinson.  That ensured a draw was the worst possible result for the Seniors.  Graham McKay and Jim Kerr reached the 16th before being overcome by Harry Warmoth and Bradley Williams.  That left two games on the course with both being all square on the 17th tee.  Although young Owen Williams was entitled to a celebratory dash across the 18th green after holing a 20-footer to beat William Skelding and Rod Evans, it was just too late, as David Lincoln and Algy Grimes had already closed out a half against the juniors to get the seniors to a winning score of 4½.  As ever, it was a close finish with the Seniors ahead by 4½ to 3½.
Eleanor and Richard made the speeches after the match was over.  The Juniors were most grateful for the refreshments provide by the seniors and all the senior pairings commented very positively on the attitude and promise of their young opponents.  Harry will be Junior captain next year and will be looking to reverse the trend.  With any luck, we will have a refurbished trophy by then!

2 Clubs and a Putter

On a glorious autumn day, with the Carthagena displaying all the colours of the rainbow, 49 hardy soles did battle for the Seniors' 2 clubs and a putter trophy.
The winner was Steve Clark with 38 points of a handicap of 16. He went round using a 6 iron and a wedge and now has 11 right handed clubs for sale, all offers considered. In 2nd place was Robert Anderson with 36 points and 3rd, on count back, was Peter Imray with 35 points.
I believe everybody had a really good day and some found that you could get out of bunkers without having a wedge, then again some did not!
Our thanks go to Rodney Thomas for organising the event and the raffle collected £135 for the Captain's Charity, The Cambridge Children's Hospice.
The next two events are the match with the juniors, which is always very competitive and the Texas scramble with the Ladies, so please sign up to both, we need you.

Also, please check out Golfer of the Year 2015 on the right of this post.

The winner: Steven Clark

2nd: Robert Anderson

3rd: Peter Imray

Autumn Singles Stableford Trophy - 13 October

It was cold but dry for the Seniors Autumn Singles Stableford today. A very good turn out of 76 played off the yellows, on the John O'Gaunt course, which was in good condition. This competition has a handicap maximum of 20 and for most people they found the course quite difficult. The result was close with 3 people tying with 37 points.
The winner was Patrick Smith, 2nd was George Turner and 3rd Steven Clark done on count back. We also had a very successful raffle collecting £202 for the captain's charity, The Cambridge Children's Hospice. John McPherson did an outstanding job in organising the event, for which we thank him. The next competition is 2 clubs and a putter, good luck to you all.

Gordon Percival Team Trophy

A change in the weather with a couple of squally showers to liven things up. The greens seemed to be much slower today, or was it me!! A good turnout with 69 players in 23 hidden teams. Having had the information before anyone else, my two bankers came first and second. There were some surprises with players not playing as well as they would do normally but it was still enjoyed by all.
David Wrench (fresh from his Turkish golfing Holiday), John Sandland and David (not him again!!) Crosby were the winners with 101 points
Stephen Cooper, Sam Standen and Dave Newland came second with 98 points.
Richard Munns, Alan Anderson and John McPherson were third , on count back with 97 points.
See below for all the team scores.

Bailiff Shield, Tues, 29th September 2015

Another fine day saw over 70 Seniors take to the field to contest the Bailiff Shield. With the fairways showing some grass and the rough being rough, it made a fair test for all who played. The greens had recovered from the work on them and played well. As a result scoring was not that difficult for the higher handicappers, who filled the first five places. All the podium group were level on 38 points with David Crosby, continuing his current fine form, coming out on top with Mike Marshall, second and John McPherson, third.

Away Match v Gog Magog Elders, Thurs, Sept 17th.

Following John O'Gaunts' win of 6-2 on a sunny day in June, this away match was also played on a sunny day in September. Unusually, and by way of a challenge, lately announced NHS appointments claimed five of the Jog team such that, by 9pm on the 16th, JOG was still two golfers short of a full team. It speaks volumes for the ‘esprit de corps’ of the JOG Senior’s Section that, even at that late hour, members stepped forward to fill the vacancies, despite the need for them to arrive at ‘The Gogs’ by 7.45am the following morning, and that after negotiating the notorious Cambridge rush hour traffic.
The match was played on Gog Magog’s physically demanding (hilly) Wandlebury Course, with its wide fairways, soft sand-filled bunkers and tricky undulating greens. However, despite such unfamiliar playing surfaces and a certain amount of sleep deprivation, the JOG Team rose to the occasion and halved the match.
After observing a minute of silent reflection in honour of the recently deceased former captain of the Elders, Ramsay Bovaird and after the usual excellent ’Gogs lunch’, served by smiling waitresses in the very well appointed (but view lacking) Gog Magog Dining Room, Graham McKay, JOG’s Captain for the match, toasted the Gog Magog Team and announced that it had won three games and halved two, as had the John O’ Gaunt Team.

Captain's Day

Well I think we did Richard proud today and I would like to thank the organising team for putting on a wonderful show. Vice Captain Jim, although under the weather, got everyone together and orchestrated wonderfully. The ladies in the foyer, who took our monies so well, it seemed we hadn't paid anything !!
Everything was there, the card, the Programme, the marker for the captain's drive, the putting comp card and the chipping comp entry slip, the Two's club and the Raffle tickets.
On the first tee we had the dulcet tones of Pat Gilgallon, trying to emulate the starter for the Open. Sue (Scarbrow) was on the tenth and she also announced all the players.
When we came in, Steve Ackrill was on hand to help with entering the cards and the catering team were there to hand out the team sandwiches and chips.
My thanks go to Jim for making it a great day for all who played in it and we should also thank Pat Gilgallon, Neil Pinnington, and the Ladies for their good works. Special thanks to Jean Peacock and Algy Grimes for keeping order in the putting and chipping competitions respectively.
The Captain also did a drive off the first, I am not sure what happened, as it wasn't reported !!!!
I think that the AAA screening team were kept busy and I hope everyone had a positive result.
So, to the Prizes. Captain Richard put on a superb prize table and there were also four fourballs at various courses that were sold off for the Captain's Charity. The money raised for the Captain's Charity was a magnificent £783.00 !!!

The Captain's Trophy, for the putting Competition went to Brian Gill

The Chipping Competition was won by Les Bolland
The Captain's drive was closest to Neil Pinnington's marker
There were 7 players who got two's but only five were in the Two's Club, they were Messrs, White, Wakefield, Evans(D), Bunyan and Cooper.
Nearest the Pin on the 4th was Steve Cooper
Nearest the Pin on the 10th was Keith Hargreaves
Nearest the Pin on the 16th was Gerry Gentle
Nearest the Pin in Two on the 11th was Peter Wade

The Kethro Trophy was won by John Thoday, on count back from Phil White, both on 37 points.

Robert Anderson was third, on count back from Neil Pinnington, with 35 points.
